The Latvian-Estonian Basketball League (LIBL) club “Liepāja” has signed an agreement with the Latvian U16 national team player Juris Vītols, the club announced on its “Facebook” account on Friday. The club emphasizes that Vītols has been one of the leaders in the Latvian U16 basketball team.
“I am very happy to join the Liepaja team. This will be an ideal opportunity to prove yourself at a higher level, as well as an opportunity to progress and develop as players. It is a real pleasure to train under the leadership of a very good team of coaches and I am looking forward to the new season in the ranks of “Liepāja”, “says the basketball player about joining.
“Vītols is a well-known player to me, because when we lived in Riga, my son played with him in the DSN team under coach Māriņš Fomins. Already at that time I noticed that Vītols is very balanced for his age and in a stressful situation he is able to control both his game and lead the team. I consider this to be his greatest talent, ”says the team’s head coach Artūrs Visockis-Rubenis as a newcomer.
“He is still very young and he has to improve in many elements of basketball by investing purposeful work. Therefore, it is a great pleasure that he and his family have appreciated the Liepāja basketball system and have chosen to continue their growth right here, ”the coach adds. The first fight of LIBL this season will be played by Liepaja players on Saturday, when “Liepāja” will play with Rakvere “Tarvas”.
In the main tournament, the teams will play a two-round tournament until March 20. The top eight will compete in the quarter-finals, with the winners determined by the sum of two games. LIBL champions are expected to be determined in the final four tournament. The season will end with the elimination games of the Latvian and Estonian championships.
14 teams – six Latvian units – “VEF Rīga”, “Ogre”, “Ventspils”, “Valmiera Glass” / “Vidzeme University College”, “University of Latvia” and “Liepāja” participate in the LIBL championship in the season of 2021/22, as also eight Estonian teams – Tallinn “Kalev” / ”Cramo”, Rapla “Avis Utilitas”, “Parnu Sadam”, “University of Tartu”, Rakvere “Tarvas”, Tallinn “Kalev” / TLU, “TalTech” and Hābnese “Viimsi” . 13 teams participated in the 2020/2021 season.
