Lielā Kristaps 2022: Watch 12 Award-Winning Latvian Films for Free

In honor of the “Lielā Kristaps” cinema award, on the website of the National Cinema Center filmas.lv from January 30 to February 6, it is possible to watch 12 films for free in two thematic blocks – six films in which the “Lielā Kristapa” Lifetime Award laureate, cinematographer Ieva Romanova worked, and six of the best films of “Lielā Kristapa” awarded the previous year.

This year, the “Lielā Kristaps” Lifetime Achievement Award goes to cinematographer Ieva Romanova, and the selection of the portal highlights six feature films, important stops in her creative biography. The first film in which Ieva Romanova appears as an artist director is director Varas Brasla’s feature film “Wish me an unfavorable flight” (1980), a story about a woman’s loneliness and choice that is still relevant today; starring Akvelina Līvmane. A vivid phenomenon of the 80s is director Arvīdas Krieva’s crime thriller “Raspberry Wine” (1984), where the environment created by artist Ieva Romanova, the filming locations found and arranged by the creative team play a huge role in creating the appropriate mood.

Ieva Romanova received the first “Big Kristap” for her work as an artist in the two-episode feature film “Life” (1989) by director Aivars Freimanis – an unusually created work of art that surprises with professionally challenging techniques, portraying the awakening of national self-awareness of the Latvian people during the years of Krišjānis Baron’s life and also during the shooting of the film . Jānis Streič’s feature film “Mills of Fate” (1997) is also a vivid testimony of its era, in this case the portrayal of Latvia in the 90s of the 20th century – a melodrama set against the background of “wild capitalism” with elements of juicy comedy, one of the most popular Latvian feature films of the “new times”. and also an impressive proof of the scope of the cinematographer’s work.

The two films included in this selection of Ieva Romanova’s works represent Latvian cinema of the 21st century, and both are notable for the artist’s contribution to the overall shape of the film. Artist Ieva Romanova considers director Arvīdas Krieva’s picturesquely mystical and slightly creepy feature film “I like that a girl is sad” (2004) to be a rather underrated, but very interesting phenomenon; It also remains in Latvian cinema history as the convincing debut of musician Mārtiņš Freimans on the cinema screen. On the other hand, the Centennial feature film “Bille” (2018) by director Ināra Kolmane is not only a story about a little girl growing up, loved by the audience, but also a historical film and therefore a thorough work of a cinematographer – the depiction of life in Latvia in the 1930s requires a serious investment in the study of the era and the film’s environment in formation.

The second selection of films posted on the portal is the best works of “Lielā Kristapa” 2022, which were each awarded in their own film category a year ago – the best feature film “January” (director Viesturs Kairišs), the best short film “First Steps” (director Pauls ķesteris), the best the full-length documentary film “My mother country” (director Ieva Ozoliņa), the best animated film “My marriage project” (director Signe Baumane), the best debut film “Tikmēr Lucavsala” (director Elza Gauja) and the best multi-series film “Criminal case for a beginner” (director Armands Zvirbulis, the first episode of the film can be viewed on the portal with a link to the streaming platform where the other episodes are available).

Of these films, “Bille”, “January” and “My marriage project” will be shown for one day only – on February 3.
