By launching the “Blood you free” operation in March 2022, the Liège alderwoman for Social Cohesion, Julie Fernandez Fernandez, intended to fight against menstrual precariousness. The idea was to distribute free periodic protection of all types to people in need, while allowing them to develop the action by giving their opinion. But she probably had no idea that “Sang toi libre” would be propelled into the top 10 of a European competition, the “Innovation in politics awards”, aimed at rewarding innovative solutions to social issues.
Yet that is what is happening. The action in Liège was indeed acclaimed by a jury made up of 1,045 citizens among the 337 projects from 26 countries.
On May 11 in Warsaw, the ten finalists will be decided. We will then know whether or not the Cité Ardente will be on the first step of the podium. But whatever happens, this selection in the top 10 already proves that “Blood you free” is an example in terms of political innovation in Europe.
