The Liège Expo project is progressing! This Friday, the first iron structures were lifted to build the future Hall number 1 of the new Halles des Foires de Liège site.
It’s a big day on the Liège Expo site in the multimodal area of Bressoux. This Friday, the first iron structures, the main element of the project, were lifted to build what will later be Hall 1, with an area of more than 5,600 m². In total, 13,000 tons of iron will be lifted to accommodate the new Halles des Foires, formerly located in Coronmeuse. For the workers, it is a symbolic day. “It’s still a pretty heavy lifting that we did today. The structure weighs more or less 32 tons, and is 78 meters long, lifted by two mobile cranes. But it went very well. Everything is going as it should. We’re not going to complain.“explains Tom Vroon, project manager at ASK Romein, a Flemish construction company.
Revitalization of the neighborhood
This project is part of the “City in Transition” programme, supported by the City of Liège. The budget amounts to more than 50 million euros and is co-financed by the ERDF and Wallonia. The new Halles des Foires will host all types of events such as fairs, exhibitions and even concerts. For Pierre Castelain, spokesman for the SPI, this is a major project. “It’s about 14,000 square meters in a multimodal philosophy that will accommodate a lot of events in a hyper-strategic place, very well located in relation to the communication node.“
Right in time
For the moment, the work, which began in 2021, is on schedule. The completion of the building envelope is scheduled for the end of 2023. The inauguration, for its part, will take place in 2024.
