A month after his crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen, Jasper Stuyven (32) has been included in the Lidl-Trek selection for the Tour of Italy (4 to 26 May). Edward Theuns (32) is also part of the eight that will start the first big tour of the season in Turin on Saturday.
Stuyven’s selection is a bit of a surprise. The Flemish Brabander was involved in the serious crash during Dwars door Vlaanderen on March 27, with Wout van Aert as the main victim. Stuyven broke his collarbone in that fall and was successfully operated on in Herentals the next day. After which a race against the clock could begin for Stuyven. After all, he was scheduled for the Tour of Italy, which now starts on Saturday. Stuyven quickly resumed training on the rollers and has now been given the green light to start on Saturday. It will be Stuyven’s second Giro participation. He was already at the start in 2017, a second place in stage six behind the Swiss Silvan Dillier was his best result.
