On October 1, we commemorated the International Day of Senior Citizens. And it was on this occasion that the new cooperation between the Council of Senior Citizens and Lidl Czech Republic started. For all seniors over the age of 65, there is a special event in supermarkets in the week of September 9.

As a gift, they can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs and unpackaged bread with a ten percent discount. Seniors must ask about the discount and show an ID with their photo and date of birth when paying.

According to the Council of Senior Citizens, this idea arose from complaints by senior citizens who do not like that traditional printed leaflets are slowly being replaced by loyalty events and discount programs in smartphones, which not everyone has. When the chains advise that their children should teach them, the Council of Seniors says that children often do not have the patience for it.

It hasn’t been that long since we noticed in stores that there is always at least one product on the shelves where there are washing powders and dishwasher tablets…

According to Lenka Desatová, chairwoman of the Council of Senior Citizens, 77 percent of senior citizens still have a push-button telephone, and this is because it is more user-friendly for them.

Is the discount big enough?

“Do you want to please your grandmother or grandfather? Tell them what’s coming up here!,” wrote Lidl on Facebook. A heated debate broke out under the post within minutes. There are over a thousand comments. And they are more or less still the same.

There were opinions such as: “Why only pensioners? And why not pensioners under the age of 65? Why not the disabled, single mothers or children?” “Children definitely need more fruits and vegetables,” said the discussion.

A number of people also did not like the fact that they were shopping for their elderly relatives, who no longer go to the shops, but would not be entitled to the discount.

The debaters also did not like the fact that the discount was “only” ten percent.

“So tomorrow I’m taking my mother, who is 83 years old. We’ll buy mountain bread and save 3.50, five potatoes, cucumbers, and grapes 10.70, ten eggs four crowns, and that will pay off for her,” the man dug ironically.

Another problem was that seniors had to ask for a discount and submit documents. It is said to be discriminatory and humiliating.

At the same time, Lidl was the only store chain that decided to cooperate with the Council of Senior Citizens. The others did not respond to their call.

“It’s not worth it to me.”

According to Vít Pravda, CEO of Lidl, healthy food means more expensive food, which is why seniors go here. “With this event, we would like to help seniors eat healthy,” said Vít Pravda at the press conference for the International Day of Seniors, which was held on September 27 in the Chamber of Deputies and where PrahaIN.cz was.

Six months ago, when a Lidl customer in OC Bořislavka in Prague 6 wrote to us that she refused to put her shopping in the basket because it was heavily soiled,…

We also went to one of Prague’s Lidls on Monday afternoon. We didn’t notice any rush, there were no queues, it quickly cleared up at the cash registers.

An elderly lady was shopping in front of us, she had a few pieces of fruit and pastries in her basket, but she didn’t mention the discount. When we asked her if she knew about the discount, she said that she did, but that the few crowns weren’t worth someone checking her age.

We stayed in the store for a while and observed. Another man already showed his ID and got a discount. “About 12 crowns,” he shrugged when asked how much his purchase had become cheaper.
