Lidl cancels free electric car charging. Even for those who didn’t buy

Since 2017, Lidl has been operating free charging stations for electric cars in the Czech Republic. However, all 40 stations that are active today will gradually charge from this August.

Partly due to rising energy prices, but Lidl also names another phenomenon.

“During that time, there was a significant increase in the price of electricity, as well as an increase in the number of electric cars and thus an increase in charging prices at public charging stations. This step, of course, led to the fact that drivers of electric cars began to use our charging stations more and more, which were free until now, even in cases where they did not shop with us,” Lidl spokesman Tomáš Myler said when asked by Novinek.

According to Lidl, but also from the experience of the AutoMoto section of Novinek, there were often situations where customers of the store lost the benefit of combining shopping in the store and recharging the electric car, as the charging stations were permanently occupied.

Lidl will gradually equip the racks with instructions, and payment will be made through a QR code, which redirects the user to a specialized page. “Currently, the prices will be set at 5.9 CZK/kWh incl. VAT for AC charging and 6.9 CZK incl. VAT for fast DC charging. Prices may of course change in the future depending on the price of electricity,” said Myler.
