Lidl becomes number one, dethroning Kaufland after a decade of supremacy. The two companies are separated by only 25 million lei

The German discounter Lidl became the leader of the Romanian food trade ten years after the official entry on the market by taking over Plus Discount. The Germans finished last year with a turnover of 12.86 billion lei, after a 32% increase in 2020, the year of the pandemic.

Thus, the company became number one in the profile market, surpassing Kaufland, a sister company, part of the same Schwartz group. Kaufland closed last year with a turnover of 12.83 billion lei, plus 7.4%.

Thus, there is a change of leader in the food trade market after a decade, another German retailer becoming number one. In fact, even before Kaufland, the leader was the Metro Cash & Carry group from the same country.

Lidl came to Romania in 2011 officially taking over 107 Plus Discount stores, only to expand from zero to about 300 units today. The company’s plans do not stop here.

Last year, Lidl obtained a net profit of 750 million lei, plus 52%.
