Licorice Compound Shows Promise in Fighting Pancreatic Cancer, Study Finds

Al-Marsad Newspaper: A recent study found that a chemical present in licorice can help fight pancreatic cancer.

Scientists said the discovery of the substance could pave the way for new and improved treatments with fewer side effects and ultimately help save lives.

A team from the University of Hong Kong studied the efficacy of the compound in mice, and found that isoliquiretgenin reduced the survival rate of cancer cells by up to 80 percent and enhanced the effect of drugs commonly used to treat the disease.

Dr Joshua Koo Ka-Shun, associate professor who led the study, said: ‘Lycorice has the unique property of inhibiting the development of pancreatic cancer by blocking autophagy, a natural process whereby the body’s cells clean up damaged or unnecessary components.
