According to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), New York drivers can change their license information, both due to errors made during the process and because, over time, this information has changed. This type of request also applies to other information on file with the DMV, such as an email address.

In most cases, to make changes to the driver’s license, applicants are required to submit proof of the change to a local DMV office.

How to change the information that appears on the driver’s license?

When it comes to changing your driver’s license, the address and residence name are usually the data that the average driver tries to change. This is due to possible removals or events such as marriages, divorces, adoptions or legal name changes in court. In any case, the procedure for making such changes to this document tends to be the same: essentially it involves requesting a new replacement document that reflects the new information. The steps to follow are those:

Change of name

1. First of all it is necessary verify eligibility to do so by mailwhich is the most convenient way. In this case, the applicant must:
– Have a social security number (SSN) registered with the DMV. If it is a name change, the name must have already been changed in the social security administration system.
– Do not have a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or a commercial student permit (CLP).
– It is not necessary to change other information (e.g. height, gender, address, etc.).

2. Complete a name change request form on the standard permit, driver’s license or non-driver identification card (PDF) only (MV-44NC).

3. Keep one handy copy of the social security card with the updated name.

4. Have a copy of your license, permission or your current New York State “standard” non-driver ID.

5. Keep one handy copy of one or more proofs (documents) of the name change.
