In a painful and cruel story, a Libyan volunteer in one of the rescue teams intervened to retrieve one of the bodies stuck under the rubble of a building, only to discover that it was the body of his father, who was missing as a result of the strong floods that swept through the city of Derna in eastern Libya.
In a video clip circulating on social media platforms, a rescue team appeared in the process of extracting a body from under the rubble, when suddenly the sound of wailing and crying rose. The video’s publishers said that it was the screams of one of the rescue personnel who could not contain himself from the horror of shock, after he recognized his father’s body while participating in the search operations.
Meanwhile, rescue teams and volunteers continue to work searching for thousands of missing people under the rubble of destroyed buildings, at sea and on the beaches, in a mission that may take several weeks, while families wait for their loved ones to be found.
In this context, the Minister of Health of the parliament-backed government, Othman Abdel Jalil, said in a press conference on Monday evening that the Ministry of Interior had received about 4,000 reports of missing persons, indicating that the missing cannot be considered dead.
The minister added that the latest statistics indicate that these floods led to the death of 3,338 people in the affected areas, stressing the difficulty of counting the number of missing people, given the scale of the disaster, especially in the city of Derna.
In addition to human losses, the torrential floods caused comprehensive destruction to a number of areas in eastern Libya, especially the city of Derna, where entire neighborhoods disappeared and the infrastructure collapsed in an indescribable manner.
