Libyan parliament votes for approval of caretaker government / Article / LSM.lv

The Libyan parliament voted on Wednesday to approve the caretaker government. In line with the UN-backed resolution plan, the government of national unity will lead war-torn Libya until the December elections.

Since 2011, when the long-standing Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown and killed in a NATO-backed uprising, chaos has prevailed in the North African country. Two rival governments and many militant groups have applied for state leadership.

Abdulhamid Dbeiba’s national unity government, appointed prime minister, will replace the two rival administrations that have ruled Libya for several years. After two days of intense debate in the coastal city of Sirta, 121 of the 132 Members present voted to approve Dbeiba’s cabinet.

The caretaker government now faces many serious challenges, from a severe economic crisis and soaring unemployment to high inflation and weak public services.

Dbeiba’s proposed cabinet will have 33 ministers and two vice-prime ministers, who will represent the various regions and social strata of Libya.
