Libya: Deterioration in politics, economy and security, sees the UN – 2024-08-23 07:12:14

The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Political Affairs and the Deputy Head of Mission (UNSMIL), Stephanie Kouri, informed the Security Council about the situation in Libya.

Ms Kouri warned that in the last two months, the situation in the country has deteriorated quite rapidly in terms of politics, economy, security and stability.

He said “unilateral actions by Libyan politicians, military and security officials have increased tensions, further entrenched institutional and political divisions, and complicated efforts to find a negotiated solution.” Amidst these developments, Ms Kouri said the UN mission, together with member states, has been actively working to de-escalate the current crisis.

According to Mrs. Kouri, the self-governing elections are progressing and are expected to be held in mid-October, adding that the Supreme National Electoral Commission, with the support of the UN mission, is taking the necessary actions.

It is noted that for a year no replacement has been found for the former special envoy of the Secretary General for Libya, Abdoulaye Batili.

Mr. Batili resigned as special envoy in 2023 stating that “the international organization cannot successfully support the political transition effort, as long as the political leaders put their personal interest above the common good, in a country that for over a decade it has been in the midst of civil war and complete uncertainty.”

Batili was appointed to the position in September 2022, following the sudden resignation of his predecessor, Jan Kubis.

“The process is ongoing. I think it’s no secret that being the head of the UN mission in Libya is a demanding job. It takes time to find the right candidate to go through the process required to become a special envoy, which requires a lot of consultation,” said Secretary-General’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric during the Press Briefing at the headquarters of the international organization in New York.
