The board of The Document Foundation sends the Apache OpenOffice project open letter. It calls for cooperation in order to help users, especially new ones. And it adds strong arguments.
It has been 20 years since the OpenOffice project was born, as Sun’s open successor to the StarOffice package. LibreOffice is today the only well-developed successor to this original project, as OpenOffice does not continue in principle even under the wings of Apache, and the current version builds only on the slightly updated version 4.1 from 2014.
During the 6 years of stagnation of OpenOffice, LibreOffice has undergone constant rapid development. In the meantime, the project brought a lot of key innovations (eg export to docx / xlsx / pptx, signing of PDF / ODF and OOXML, big improvements to the Calc spreadsheet editor, new notebookbar interface,…). But the OpenOffice brand is still so strong that people often don’t even know about LibreOffice (including the possibility of professional user support) and survive on a very outdated predecessor with a resounding name.
The Document Foundation calls on the Apache Office to do the right thing and join forces and work towards a common goal.
