Liberation day without festivals: how do we celebrate freedom?

People are also called at home to light a freedom fire: by lighting a candle, light or torch and online to pass on to friends and family.

Liberation festivals

The Liberation Festivals in Zwolle, Amsterdam and Rotterdam, for example, will not take place this year, but this year’s ambassadors Roxanne Hazes, Snelle, Lucas & Steve and Kris Kross Amsterdam are building a party online and via social media. There are also four documentaries made about what freedom means to these artists.

At the request of the National Committee on 4 and 5 May, Roxanne Hazes has her own version of the song Sing, fight, cry, pray, laugh, work and admire made of Ramses Shaffy.

At five minutes to five this song is played by various radio stations and carillonneurs have also been asked to play the song. The Martini Tower in Groningen, the Peperbus in Zwolle and the St. Bavokerk in Haarlem, among others, have announced their participation.

May 5 concert from Theater Carré

No Concert on the Amstel on May 5, but instead the annual May 5 concert will take place in an adapted form from the foyer of Theater Carré in Amsterdam. Artists Simone Kleinsma, Giovanca, Roel van Velzen, mezzo-soprano Maria Fiselier and violinist Noa Wildschut will perform there, accompanied by the Metropole Orchestra.

The NOS broadcasts the May 5 concert from 20.35 on NPO 1. Presenter Simone Weimans gives an overview of the highlights of the May 5 concerts from the past. And as is usual since 1998, the May 5 concert ends as always with We’ll Meet Again.

Freedom meal soup

Freedom meals are said to take place across the country, but the corona measures prevent this. Anyone can join in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. On freedom meal soup is the recipe of star chefs, Amsterdammers can prepare the soup themselves and eat it together at half past four. In Rotterdam a similar initiative has been set up: the soup is served there a little later: between 5 and 6.

Dancing to Martin Garrix

Those who miss dancing at a Liberation Festival can dance for an hour at home on a set by Martin Garrix. The DJ sails on a yacht somewhere across Dutch waters and simultaneously plays a special Liberation Festival live set.

What we wear

And the Amsterdam Resistance Museum is curious about what Dutch people wear this year on Liberation Day, under the heading ‘What do you wear May 5’? Inspired by resistance woman Mies Boissevain, who called in 1945 to make the national party skirt to celebrate the liberation. This party skirt was made of small pieces of fabric, on which women embroidered precious memories and important dates.

It museum is curious about the liberation outfits of 75 years later and calls for photos to be shared on Instagram or Facebook.
