The publishing sector faces the LIBER 2021 fair, to be held in Madrid from October 13 to 15, as an opportunity to recover book exports that fell 26 percent in 2020 due to the pandemic, compared to the growth of 0.8 percent. cent experienced in the domestic market.
This was highlighted this Friday by Patrici Tixis, president of the Federation of Publishers Guilds of Spain (FGEE), at the press conference in which the International Book Fair was presented in which 300 companies from 10 countries will participate -Germany , Cyprus, Cuba, United Arab Emirates, Spain, United States, Russian Federation, Italy, Mexico and Republic of Korea.
It is the 39th edition of this international fair that, says the organization, “will show the vitality of a sector, that of the Spanish book, which in this exceptional time has seen the number of readers grow to an all-time high in Spain, especially during confinement. just as it has increased its billing “.
And it is that while sales outside the Spanish borders fell by 26 percent in 2020, to 374.6 million euros, turnover in the domestic market increased by 0.8 percent, to 2,439.93 million euros.
“Events such as LIBER are an unbeatable opportunity to recover our export position, which had been very dynamic in the last decade, and to consolidate the growth experienced in the domestic market,” Tixis pointed out.
Of the export figures, 86.3 percent, that is, 323.51 million, corresponded to books from the publishing sector, while 13.7 percent, (51.18 million euros) were exports from the printing sector .
Regarding the geographic areas to which these exports were directed, Latin America continues to be the main market for the book sector, with 184 million euros in sales, mainly exports from the publishing sector, after which the European Union is located, which, in 2020, reached turnover figures of 126.6 million euros.
With the rest of European countries, including the United Kingdom, the figure increased to 181.5 million euros. Regarding exports by country, Mexico continues to be the main recipient of Spanish publishing products, followed by France and Argentina.
With regard to imports, in 2020 they stood at 140.91 million euros, which leaves a positive balance of the Spanish trade balance of 250.8 million euros.
In contrast to what happened in the foreign market, sales figures in the domestic market increased by 0.8% to reach 2,439.93 million euros.
This is reflected in the Study of Domestic Book Trade in Spain 2020, which shows that in 2020 164.45 million copies were sold on paper, 1.4% more than in 2018, and 13.27 million downloads of digital copies, 4.24% more than in the previous year.
Regarding the titles published, the effects of the confinement and the pandemic were noticeable since they decreased by 9.4% fewer titles, mainly in paper format, whose decrease was 16.5%, to 50,698. On the contrary, the number of titles in digital format increased by 10.6%, reaching 23,891 digital titles. The average price of paper securities stood at 14.02 euros.
“The data on the increase in sales or the production of digital titles show the adaptability of the sector that looked for formulas to get books to readers”, Tixis pointed out.
The increase in turnover took place in almost all the book subsectors, especially in children’s and young people’s literature, which registered a growth of 17.6%, reaching 367 million euros. And also fiction for adults obtained 2.1% more than in 2019, up to 507.23 million euros.
Digital book sales increased by 5.9% compared to 2019, reaching 126.19 million euros, a figure that continues to represent around 5% of the total turnover of the sector. And the number of titles registered an increase of 10.6%, in such a way that the total offer that exists of this type of books reached 186,695 titles.
Starting next October 13, Ifema will bring together publishers, authors, literary agents and booksellers at LIBER, a fair that will encourage commercial relations and in which Guadalajara, capital of the Mexican state of Jalisco, will be the guest of honor. , “a benchmark for all of us who are dedicated to books”, concludes the president of the Federation of Publishers Guilds of Spain.
