Liam Payne was let go by his record label just days before his death

In 2016, Liam signed a contract with Capitol Records, a label of Universal Music, officially starting his solo career. After the disappointing sales of his first album and the release date of his second album being postponed, the record label decided to drop the singer. “Liam’s rise has been huge and he hasn’t delivered,” the source said. “Of all the One Direction guys, Liam was on the wrong track musically.”

On Universal Music’s website, Liam is also not listed as one of the contracted artists. Nevertheless, the record company paid tribute to the singer after his death was announced. “We are devastated by the tragic death of Liam Payne,” they wrote under a photo on Instagram. “His legacy will live on through his music and the countless fans he inspired and loved. Yes We send our deepest condolences to Liam’s family and loved ones.”

Liam died last Wednesday after falling from his balcony at the hotel where he was staying in Buenos Aires. According to local media, he fell from the third floor. Witnesses say the singer was behaving strangely in the hotel lobby earlier in the day, where he reportedly broke his laptop and eventually had to return it to his room. Some time later, Liam most likely jumped from his balcony around 5pm.

Liam leaves behind a son he had with his ex Cheryl Cole in 2017. He is 31 years old.
