Today LG has shown what its next Velvet flagship should look like. While it doesn’t show much more than the images we’ve seen before, it’s just that the added movement and lighting help give it a physical presence and contextualize it.
Here’s what it will look like:
The Velvet takes many design cues from modern smartphones. There is a curved glass back panel “colored arc design”, smooth metal sides and even a multi-lens rear camera “raindrop” which is distinguished by what it does not stand out compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max or Galaxy S20 Ultra and its Space Zoom camera hump.
LG hasn’t produced what you would call fashionable phones in a while. They are moving more towards usable utility designs like the G8. Nothing too ugly, but nothing you’d die for.
The LG Velvet is a step in a different direction for the company as a whole. Rumor has it that LG would have called the G9, which is now reorganized to take a more user-friendly name in addition to a more pleasant design language.
“Our new brand image reflects current trends that take into account the individual’s unique personal tastes and emotions with a greater emphasis on design,” said Chang Ma, executive vice president of product strategy, LG Mobile Communications Company about the next Velvet. “It is a more intuitive approach that we believe will resonate with today’s consumers and help us establish a clearer brand identity. “
