The market for foldable smartphones will continue to grow in the coming years. Manufacturers are therefore working hard on materials that can strengthen the foldable screen of these devices. LG Chem has now developed a foldable material that can be placed on these screens and must be as hard as the glass on regular smartphones.
Although manufacturers like Samsung making the folding screens more beautiful and sturdy, such screens are still very sensitive to scratches. LG’s so-called Real Folding Window should put an end to this problem. The foil is covered with a proprietary coating that makes the screen more scratch-resistant and prevents the screen from tearing. The fold lines should also be less noticeable thanks to this sturdy coating.
LG also states that the coating is thinner than the material currently found on folding screens. LG has tested the coating on 200,000 bends in both directions and the material can also be used in roll-up designs. The mass production of LG’s Folding Window will start in 2022.
