LG Rollable Roll Screen Phone Confirmed Release This Year

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Smartphone manufacturer LG released a teaser video of an upcoming roll screen phone, called the LG Rollable. Nikkei Asia has received confirmation from an LG spokesperson that the device will be released this year.

“The LG Rollable will indeed go on sale later this year,” said the spokesman, who was not named, Tuesday, January 12, 2021.

This device will use an OLED screen developed by BOE. The LG Rollable also appeared at the exhibition CES 2021, which is also announced to be available in 2021.

The LG Rollable has what the company calls a “unique resizable screen” that extends from a phone to a small tablet screen. The screen slides in and out of place to provide a larger screen area.

“Our management wants to show that this is a real product, because there are a lot of rumors around a rollable phone. And because it was showcased at CES 2021, I know it will be launched this year,” the spokesman said.

The Verge reports that LG first started working on Rollable as part of the company’s “Explorer Project” experiment. The South Korean brand has used this project previously for the LG Wing, with a rotating design and two OLED displays.

With the LG Rollable confirmed, there will be seen a race among mobile phone manufacturers to roll out this rollable display technology. TCL also demonstrated the concept of a future smartphone in March 2020, and OPPO flirted with the concept of an expandable OLED display device late last year.

However, no specific date was stated LG Rollable launched, including price details and detailed specifications, as quoted by GSM Arena.
