The OLED display technology has been well established among mobile devices and TVs for many years. Among monitors for computers, it has not had the same foothold, which is partly due to the fact that OLED panels until recently were almost exclusively provided by LG Display, which focused on the TV market.
In recent months, however, OLED has also begun to look for monitors, not least in the form of Alienware’s 34-inch with QD-OLED panel signed Samsung. In March, LG countered its first OLED display in the Ultragear seriesbut then without detailed specifications and without launch date, something that is now followed up with both more details and launch in just one month.
The smallest screen measures in at 48 inches and hovers in the borderland between screen and TV. In addition to large dimensions, LG boasts a response time of 0.1 milliseconds and an image refresh rate of 120 Hz, which in overclocked mode can be pressed all the way up to 138 Hz. The resolution lands on 3,840 × 2,160 pixels and unlike Alienware, LG skips the arched design for a more traditional shape. When it comes to colors, 98.5 percent of DCI-P3 should be achieved. In addition, HDR10 and compatibility with Nvidia G-Sync and AMD Freesync are specified.
At first glance, the Ultragear 48GQ900 is very similar to LG’s TVs of the same size, both in terms of appearance and specifications. In addition to the slightly faster panel, however, it differs on some other fronts, including the possibility of connection via Displayport and surface treated with LG’s own anti-reflective treatment.
However, other things are more TV-inspired, including the included remote control, which according to LG is “specially designed for smoother gaming sessions”. Exactly what that means remains to be seen. No price is yet available, however, launch in Europe will take place in June.
