LG introduces the first high-resolution extendable screen

The South Korean tech company has been working on the screen since 2020 and aims to bring it to market in 2024.

LG display presented the world’s first extendable screen. The 12-inch display can be stretched by two inches without losing quality. In addition, users can fold, rotate and extend the display in all directions thanks to the free-form technology without image distortion or screen damage.

According to the developer, the LG extendable screen is the successor to rollable and foldable screens like the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 from Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. The screen is made of resilient silicone which is used in the manufacture of contact lenses. The rubbery flexibility allows you to extend the screen by two inches. So 20 percent more extensible and with a high resolution of 100ppi and full RGB.

“The display’s flexibility, durability and reliability will make it ideal for commercialization,” LG Display said in a statement Message. The screen uses a micro-LED light source with a pixel pitch of less than 40 micrometers, which gives it better resistance to shock and other impacts. “Working with a spring-loaded structure, the display can withstand more than 10,000 shape changes without any problems,” it seems.

All kinds of applications

LG initiated the project and development of the extendable screen in 2020 after being selected by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy of South Korea. With the aim of developing the next generation screen, LG has partnered with then with 20 organizations of the industrial-academic sector. According to LG, the extendable screen will find its place in a wide range of applications.

LG is expected to launch the display in 2024 upon completion of the project.
