Another football season is slowly but surely drawing to a close, so we’re taking a look at the race to become Europe’s top goalscorer.
Last year the title moved to the Bundesliga. Robert Lewandowski scored 41 goals for Bayern in 2020/21, ten more than second-placed Lionel Messi.
The 34-year-old is in pole position again this season.
Lewandowski already too far away?
The captain of the Polish national team has already scored 33 goals for the German record champions this season. Second-placed Ciro Immobile is already seven goals behind Lewandowski (26). Completing the current podium is Karim Benzema, who has netted 25 times for Real Madrid this season.
Ohi Omoijuanfo has just as many goals as “Lewy”. The 28-year-old Norwegian is under contract with Red Star Belgrade in Serbia’s top division. In the ranking, however, he is ranked fourth, since the goals in the “Super Liga” are only taken into account with a factor of 1.5.
In the six top leagues, meanwhile, it is multiplied by a factor of 2.
Messi and Ronaldo further back
You have to search a little longer to find the dominators of recent years. Christiano Ronaldo doesn’t make the top 10 with his 16 Premier League goals. Lionel Messi has only four goals for PSG.
The Argentine has already lifted the Golden Boot six times (2018/19, 2017/18, 2016/17, 2012/13, 2011/12 and 2009/10) while eternal rivals Portugal have four.
Should Lewandowski be successful again this year, the Pole will join an illustrious circle. So far, only the following players have managed to win the “Golden Boot” more than once: Lionel Messi, Christiano Ronaldo, Gerd Müller, Eusebio, Dudu Georgescu, Fernando Gomes, Mario Jardel, Thierry Henry, Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez.
