Lewis Hamilton stays well ahead of Max Verstappen in Monza in first practice | Motorsport

sport">Max Verstappen recorded the second time, at more than four tenths of a second from the Briton. The Dutchman did that on the softest tire. Hamilton only rode on the harder medium rubber. Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas came in third, also on mediums. Verstappen was clearly unhappy with the balance of his car in the first part of the session.

sport">In Monza, as in July at Silverstone, the schedule is different than usual. Teams have only the first practice session to determine their setup towards the qualifying session, which starts Friday evening at 6 p.m.

sport">In that qualification, only the softest tire is driven. The fastest man does not take pole position, but will start at the front of the sprint race on Saturday afternoon. There will be a battle for pole position and the starting grid for the main race on Sunday. The numbers one to three of the sprint race also receive World Cup points: three, two and one.
