The narrow streets of Monte Carlo have their own specifics and since they cannot be overtaken, the competitors have to try their luck only with a different strategy. Well, when Lewis Hamilton got stuck in a train behind Max Verstappen, Valtter Bottas, Carlos Sainz, Land Norris and Pierre Gasly, his strategists decided to take a risk.
The seven-time world champion came into the pits in the 29th round (out of a total of 78) and exchanged soft tires for hard tires, with which he had to manage to the finish line. His team planned the stop tactically so that he could return to the track in “clean air” and start rolling fast. However, the new tires could not heat up fast enough, and when Pierre Gasly, who was driving in front of him, arrived in the pits a lap later, it was enough for him to stay ahead.
Here, Lewis Hamilton became unhappy and asked if it was the right move. At that moment, he had no idea that Sebastian Vettel and Sergio Pérez, who went into the pits even later than Pierre Gasly, would return to the track in front of him. Used soft rubbers seem to have worked better in Monaco than new hard ones. However, Mercedes’ strategists apparently did not expect this.
