Poland national team captain, Robert Lewandowski support the decision of the Polish Football Association (PFA) to refuse to play against Russia in the 2022 World Cup playoffs.
Lewandowski said it was difficult to imagine playing against the Russian national team after the attack by the country led by Vladimir Putin on Ukraine.
“I find it hard to imagine playing against the Russian national team in a situation where the aggression in Ukraine continues,” Lewandowski wrote while retweeting PFA president Cezary Kulesza’s tweet on Saturday (26/2).
“Russian footballers and fans are not wrong, but we can’t pretend nothing happened,” he continued.
Previously Kulesza said his side was in talks with Sweden and the Czech Republic regarding the 2022 World Cup playoffs. Poland, Russia, Sweden and the Czechs are on the same chart in Group B of the 2022 World Cup playoffs.
In the semifinals, Russia will meet Poland and Sweden meet the Czechs in a match originally scheduled to take place on March 24. As per the existing chart, the two semifinalist teams will meet in the final to compete for a ticket to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
“Time to act. Given the escalation of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the Polish national team will not play a match against Russia,” Kulesza wrote on his Twitter account as reported by RTE.
“This is the only right decision. We are in talks with the Swedish and Czech associations to put the same position on FIFA.”
