Sports director Hasan Salihamidzic also said: “The fact that he defended his title as the world’s best footballer underlines his outstanding status. (…) We are proud that he has enriched the history of FC Bayern with such a unique chapter.”
The whole thing can certainly be understood as an advertising tactic by Munich. Because in the coming months, according to “Bild”, there will be talks about an extension.

The record champion wants to keep Lewandowski (under contract until 2023) for a few more years. But how does the 33-year-old plan? Is he possibly looking for a new challenge at the end of his career?
New goals? Robert Lewandowski has won everything
There are also two awards as FIFA World Player of the Year (2020, 2021), the title of Europe’s Player of the Year (2020) and numerous Bundesliga records. Last season Lewandowski snatched Gerd Müller’s age-old goal record from the 1971/72 season (40 goals). The Pole scored one more goal.
The only big record that Lewandowski is still missing is the all-time goal record – also set by Gerd Müller, who scored 365 goals in his Bundesliga career. The 33-year-old Bayern star is currently at 300. In addition, Lewandowski is still lurking for the prestigious Ballon d’Or.
Always new rumors about Lewandowski
It was only at the end of last year that Lewandowski had to realize when he lost to Lionel Messi: his chances would probably have been better at another top European club. Because from a sporting point of view, he couldn’t really do more. If he still wants to add the Ballon d’Or to his title collection, a change may even be inevitable.
Abroad, he could also win titles that are missing from his portfolio. As early as 2019, shortly before his last extension at Bayern, there was speculation about a possible move to Real Madrid. The royals are currently prioritizing transfers from Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland. In the summer of 2021, Lewandowski was also briefly interested in moving to Chelsea, according to the “Sun”.
One thing is certain: the German record champions will be reluctant to let their star striker go into the final year of his contract without an extension. Those responsible in Munich definitely want to prevent a free transfer like that of defense chief David Alaba.
Nevertheless, the Poles will only be let go at Bayern if they clearly communicate their desire to change and an equivalent replacement can be found. Candidates who can fill the gap of a striker like Lewandowski are currently not pushing themselves. At Haaland, the competition would also be immense.
Lewandowski is not yet thinking about the future
Lewandowski feels visibly at home in Munich. He has the approval of the club bosses and is the absolute top star. Therefore, according to his own statements, he has not yet dealt with his future. “My contract doesn’t expire in the summer, so there’s still plenty of time,” said Lewandowski at a media panel the day after his award.
When asked about a possible change, he also made it clear: “When you show your performance on the pitch, it doesn’t matter whether you play in team A, B or C. We’re talking about the top European teams here.” So he doesn’t think too much about media speculation. “I’m so experienced that I can hide it,” said Lewandowski.
Saying goodbye to the top scorer in the summer would be like a real earthquake for the German record champions. At the moment, however, only rumors suggest it. And these have always turned out to be wrong in the past (so far).
