Levits will not attend Beijing Olympics, but Latvia does not plan to boycott them / Article

Latvia will be represented at the Olympic Games by Ambassador to China Maija Manika. Thus, Latvia will not follow US example and the Olympic Games will not be boycotted at the diplomatic level. Canada, Britain and Australia have also announced a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Games.

These countries blame China for human rights abuses, including repression against the Uighur minority in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and repression of the democratic movement in Hong Kong.

“President Egils Levits does not plan to go to the Beijing Winter Olympics in February, given the various circumstances, including the epidemiological conditions and the very strict restrictions that will be in place during the Olympic Games,” said Aiva Rozenberga, the President’s public relations adviser.

“The President will receive the Latvian Olympic team at Riga Castle to say the words and wish the best results. Our ambassador to China will represent the country at the Olympics. ”

The Beijing Winter Olympics will take place from February 4 to 20.
