“We, Latvians, together with Estonians, are in the first place in helping Ukraine. We have donated 1% of our gross domestic product to Ukraine, the highest percentage in the world. Then the other countries will follow,” the official emphasized, explaining that this is being done because Latvia knows what Russian occupation and deportations mean.
“We are familiar with it. We do not want Ukrainians to experience this. We don’t want anyone to experience this at all. Therefore, we are also the ones who convince Western allies that Ukraine must win this war,” emphasized Levits, adding that he sees how Western public opinion has developed. From the beginning, humanitarian aid was sent, later they began to think about a little military aid. There were known red lines not to be crossed, but all red lines were crossed. The West is sending more and more weapons and ammunition to Ukraine – what Ukraine needs to defend itself.
Two days ago, during a meeting with US President Joe Biden in Warsaw, where the presidents of NATO’s Eastern flank countries had gathered, there was a clear signal from America and the entire Western world that Ukraine would be given all the necessary help until Ukraine wins, the president recalled.
Levits thanked the “Entrepreneurs for Peace” initiative, every resident of Latvia who has done something for Ukraine – poured candles for the trenches, donated money, sent clothes, generators, etc.
“The war will end and we will help Ukraine rebuild its country. We will also help Ukraine join the European Union, because it is quite clear that Ukraine must be in the European Union. Without it, the European Union is not complete. And the same applies to NATO,” the President emphasized.
