Levits sees no need to talk to Lukashenko in the context of the migration crisis

The President of Latvia Egils Levits does not consider it necessary to talk to the authoritarian leader of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko in the context of the crisis of illegal migration, informs Justine Deičmane, the head of the Media Center of the Chancellery of the President.

Lithuanian President Gitan Nauseda has already reported in an interview with the British broadcaster BBC that the crisis of illegal migration, which has escalated at the European Union (EU) border with Belarus, could also be resolved in talks with Lukashenko. Explaining what the president said, his office later stressed that this would not mean recognizing the Minsk regime as legitimate.

However, Nauseda’s words provoked a rather turbulent reaction in Lithuania among both members of the Seimas and political experts. His remarks were also described as unexpected by the Lithuanian Foreign Minister, who reminded that so far the President has been quite confident against his contacts with Lukashenko.

Meanwhile, to the request to comment on the position of the President of Latvia on this issue, the representative of the VPK replied that the position of Latvia had already been clearly expressed, including at the level of the President. Deičmane emphasized that the EU and Latvia expect action from the Lukashenko regime to end the hybrid attack on the EU borders, as well as to release political prisoners and end violence against Belarusian civil society.

“The regime in Minsk should not hope that the pressure on the EU borders will bring legitimacy to the Lukashenko regime. The views of Latvia and the EU will remain unchanged: Belarus needs repeated, free and democratic elections as soon as possible in the presence of international observers. strengthening the border, “said a spokeswoman for the LSC.

We have already written that in the last months of the Lukashenko regime’s extended hybrid attack, efforts have been made to send thousands of illegal immigrants from Belarus to Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, most of whom have arrived in Belarus as tourists from Iraq.

The EU has accused the Minsk regime of seeking to avenge support for the Belarusian opposition and of sanctions against Belarus in response to last year’s violent crackdown on protests.
