President Egils Levits will nominate the candidate for prime minister when sufficient progress has been made in creating the government statement, President Egils Levits told reporters today after a meeting with the leader of the “New Unity” (JV), the Prime Minister Krišjāni Kariņa (JV).
The Constitution provides that the Council of Ministers is composed of a person invited by the President. The next government will also have to win the confidence of the Saeima.
Levits stressed that Kariņš will continue to lead the process of forming a coalition, in which four steps still need to be taken, including the conclusion of a memorandum of cooperation, and the related document should be considered a solid basis for the formation of the next coalition. Further negotiations on the matter for the JV, “United List” (AS) and National Association (NA) are scheduled for Wednesday 2 November.
The question of the next step is the structure of the government, which should reflect the solution to the new problems, and the JV in this context proposes the creation of the Ministry of Energy, Environment and Climate. Levitt hopes this ministry will be established.
The third issue concerns the staff who will be the responsible minister, and then the fourth or “greatest and most hard work” will begin on the creation of the government statement, the president noted.
