The war in Ukraine will accelerate the digital security of democratic countries, predicts President Egils Levits.
According to Justine Deičmane, Head of the Media Center of the Office of the President, Levits opened the Baltic-German Digital Summit in Lübeck during his working visit to Germany on Wednesday, emphasizing the role, challenges and potential of digital cooperation between the two countries.
The country’s first person points out that the Covid-19 pandemic gave a huge boost to digitalisation, and the war in Ukraine will give a boost to the need to strengthen the security of democracies, especially digital security. Levits also emphasized that currently Latvia, Germany and the European Union as a whole need to think about building a secure digital infrastructure so that technologies can be reliably served to individuals, businesses and society as a whole.
According to the President, this requires legislation and common standards, but it also requires a common understanding and awareness, as well as appropriate European investment in technology.
The President also pointed out that the German, Baltic and pan-European regions have every opportunity to experience new times in the Hanseatic League in the age of modern technology. He emphasizes that the possible accession of Finland and Sweden to the North Atlantic Alliance will expand both the geopolitical security space around the entire Baltic Sea and strengthen the ecosystem for digital infrastructure, innovation and the market.
During the opening of the German-Baltic Digital Summit, the President also announced the winners of the German-Baltic Business Award – first place went to “EyeVi Technologies” from Estonia, second place – “Atom Mobility” from Latvia, and third place – “GoRamp” from Lithuania.
