After the equalizer, Bayer 04 wanted more. A corner from the right-hand side landed at Jonathan Tah’s far post, who was able to sink the ball into the goal from the right (32′). The game turned around! Things then got strange: Wolfsburg didn’t give up and only equalized with a header from Sebastiaan Bornauw after a corner (37′) and even took the lead with a powerful right-foot shot from Mattias Svanberg into the right corner (45′ +1)!

During the break, Alonso made changes and brought on Piero Hincapie and Jeremie Frimpong. The game improved immediately and the substitute made a big impact. Hincapie equalized just four minutes after the restart. After a corner from the left, he broke through at the near post and headed the ball over the line (49′). The Werkself set the tone but couldn’t get through. It was only after a red card for Yannick Gerhardt, who stepped on Frimpong’s foot, that momentum was restored. Substitute Victor Boniface received a pass in the penalty area deep in stoppage time and scored with a shot from the turn into the bottom left corner (90′ +3). Lucky punch!
