At least 27 people were killed on Wednesday while attempting to cross the English Channel from France. It was the deadliest migrant incident ever on the Channel. The number of migrants and refugees trying to cross the Channel has been rising for weeks. Many also succeed in that journey. The British coastguard has already counted three times as many migrants and refugees this year as last year.
That trend is leading to tensions between the French and British governments over how to handle the issue. Normally, a European meeting about this would be held on Sunday in Calais, with representatives from France, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and the European Commission. But suddenly British Home Secretary Priti Patel is no longer welcome in Calais. The meeting will take place, but without the British.
