AKURAT.CO, Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer diagnosed in Indonesian women. The causes of breast cancer are not fully understood. Therefore, it is difficult to prevent breast cancer. The only way that can be done is screening and early detection.
There are two ways to carry out early breast detection, namely BSE (Breast Self-Examination) and SADANIS (Clinical Breast Examination).
“BEARING, the examination is once a month, carried out on the seventh to tenth day starting from the first day of menstruation,” explained the oncology surgeon, dr. Bob Andinata, Sp.B(K). Onk., to AKURAT.CO saat Pink webinar series Quality Life After Breast Cancer, Jumat, (15/10/2021).
Don’t worry, BSE can also be done by women who are already menopausal, aka no longer menstruating. Checks can be done at any time, the most important thing is that they are routinely carried out once a month at the same time.
“If you are menopausal, maybe remember first, is your period at the beginning of the month? In the middle of the month or at the end? That’s okay. Or secondly, use the birthday date. For example, if your birthday is on the 10th, you can also check it on the 10th. It’s a monthly inspection,” he said.
Following AKURAT.CO describe the steps to do BSE:
- In front of a mirror, raise your hand and check for redness, swelling or abnormality in the nipple or breast.
- Place your hands on your waist and check for abnormalities in your nipples and breasts like the first step.
- Press the breast from top to bottom and feel for lumps.
- Press the breast in a circle and feel again if there is a lump.
- Press the breast toward the nipple and see if any fluid comes out. If the discharge is white, it’s still normal. Meanwhile, if what comes out is yellow or red or blood, then an examination must be carried out.
- Lying position with your back propped up with a pillow, press the breast back in a circle.
Even though at the time of BSE there were no complaints or symptoms of breast cancer, it is advisable to continue doing SADANIS.
“SADANIS is carried out not only when there are complaints. No complaints have to do SADANIS,” said dr. Bob.
For women under the age of 40 years, SADANIS may be performed every two years or every three years, depending on risk factors. However, women who are over 40 years old are advised to do it every year. As for some SADANIS can be in the form of mammography, and supporting examination, namely ultrasound.[]
