In fact, in the year in which the Airc volunteers cannot take to the streets due to the pandemic, it is still possible to support scientific research by purchasing the iconic red citrus fruits in large-scale distribution.

Airc’s commitment for 2021
In 2021 the Airc Foundation and the Italian Research Foundation a on Cancer will invest more than 125 million euros to support about 5,190 researchers who are working on the development of methods for increasingly early diagnosis and more effective and targeted treatments for all types of cancer. An extraordinary commitment, possible thanks to the trust of 4.5 million supporters and the contribution of 20,000 volunteers, which translates into the support of 622 research projects, 71 scholarships, 22 special programs and IFOM, a center of international excellence in the field of molecular oncology.
Cancer, in fact, remains a global emergency and researchers and doctors cannot afford any setbacks. According to the report The numbers of cancer in Italy 2020, for example, last year cancer caused, in our country alone, more than 25% of total deaths and 377,000 new diagnoses were registered, that is, more than 1,000 a day.
The repercussions of Covid-19 on the oncological situation
Cancer is always an important challenge but it is even more so in this particular historical context. “The Covid emergency, in addition to not having put the tumor in lockdown, has had several negative consequences on the progress of research in oncology” Federico Caligaris Cappio, Scientific Director of the Airc Foundation.
«The first repercussion was that on basic research, as the activity of the studies conducted in the laboratory has been greatly slowed down and are essential for understanding the mechanisms that lead to the development of cancer and its progression. The second on clinical transfer and in particular on studies conducted for the approval of new drugs or new therapeutic strategies for patients. Added to this is the alarm launched by the National Screening Observatory on postponement of screening with an impact on new diagnoses and a consequent delay in treating the disease. All indications that make us understand the need to give new impetus to the work of our scientists to recover, in the shortest possible time, the lost ground because cancer does not wait ».
