August 30, 2023, Riga – Europe’s leading transport service platform “Bolt” has created an online photo gallery. It was designed with the aim of highlighting the positive changes in urban public outdoor space that have occurred over time, replacing driveways and parking lots with pedestrian streets and squares. The aim of the campaign is to encourage city governments and citizens to take action in order to further promote a more positive transformation of public outdoor space in European cities and help prevent car dependence.
The idea of capturing urban changes in photographs is not new – it is becoming an increasingly popular tool to see and assess how cities have changed over time for the benefit of people and residents. Initially, “Bolt” found and collected photographs from various locations in the cities in the archives of 18 European cities, where photographer T. Tunnels later went to capture the same locations decades later in less than a month. The results of the photographs speak for themselves – several cities have seen significant and fascinating changes that benefit people, not cars.
This issue has also been relevant in Riga in recent years. For example, the first attempts to make Türbatas Street more pedestrian-friendly took place already at the beginning of 2020, when it was initially opened only to pedestrians for one day, later in the summer it was closed to vehicular traffic for a month. It was not repeated in the following years. After these attempts to make the capital city more pedestrian-friendly and suitable for life in 2020, it could be concluded that the right solutions to reduce the number of cars in cities still need to be found, because most often they are painful and unpopular, and not only car owners are dependent on cars, but often also pedestrians have caused the fact that cars move past the windows of the house where they live, instead of happy and chattering residents and guests of Riga.
“Bolt’s mission is to offer the best alternatives to the purchase of a personal car, thus contributing to the transformation of city centers into better places in terms of economic, social and sustainability. Although the photos taken during the “Let’s adapt cities for people” campaign show positive changes, cities still have a lot to strive for. Not only municipalities need to improve the urban planning approach, which is aimed directly at the needs of people and residents, but also the residents themselves must want to create a more pleasant environment for living in the city and be ready for change,” says Kristīne Bezerra-Kjerulfa, manager of “Bolt” in Latvia.
In the online photo gallery created as part of the “Let’s adapt cities to people” campaign (makecitiesforpeople.com) looks at urban transformations in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Dublin, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Copenhagen, London, Madrid, Oslo, Paris, Prague, Stockholm, Tallinn, Turin, Warsaw and Vienna.
