Less than two days after the peace deal, the Taliban are threatening with an offensive

The peace agreement is already arguing between the strict Islamic Taliban and the Afghan government. They disagree on the release of 5,000 prisoners. The Taliban and the US agreed last Sunday that 5000 Taliban would be released, which is about half of all Taliban in the Afghan cell.

Quarrel about prisoners

The US and the Taliban are out, but in the meantime the Afghan government appears to disagree with all the agreements. “There is no obligation to release 5,000 prisoners,” Afghan President Ghani said on Sunday. Ghani wants to talk best about releasing prisoners, “but it cannot be a condition for conversations.”

For the Taliban, that is unacceptable: they just want to talk to the Afghan government after their prisoners are free. According to a spokesperson, the Taliban is ready for discussions. “But we are waiting for the release of our 5,000 prisoners. If those, one hundred or two hundred more or less, do not matter, are not released, then there will be no discussions”.

Threat

The Taliban have now announced that they will fight the Afghan government forces again if the prisoners are not released. International troops said they would leave the Taliban alone.

If the Taliban lived up to this threat, it could be a line through the peace deal. It was signed last Sunday, 18 years after the US invaded Afghanistan.
