Less than half of the families have taken out insurance against the risk of occupational disability (BI). This was the result of a representative survey by the Mentefactum institute on behalf of R+V Versicherung.

According to the survey, only 43 percent of families in Germany have taken out insurance against the risk of being unable to work. The proportion is somewhat higher for families with children, but at 47 percent less than half of those surveyed have taken appropriate precautions. If there are no children in the household, the awareness of the risk of disability is less pronounced. Only 39 percent of childless couples have taken out occupational disability insurance. On behalf of R+V Versicherung, the Mentefactum institute surveyed a representative sample of 1,005 employed persons aged between 20 and 45 who live in a partnership.

48 percent of those surveyed (multiple answers possible) named the supposedly high costs for this protection as the most common reason for not taking out BI protection. A total of 25 percent assume that they will not become disabled themselves, 18 percent have not yet informed themselves.

The fear of being unable to work is also expressed differently in families with and without children: 38 percent of the couples with children surveyed are very (28%) or even very seriously (10%) afraid of becoming unable to work. In contrast, in households without children, only 26 percent are very (21%) or very (5%) afraid of it. According to the industry association GDV, one in four employees becomes disabled at least once in their working life.

Accidents are much more rarely the cause than those surveyed assume

Some of the interviewees are way off the mark with the causes of incapacity to work. With 54 percent each (multiple answers possible), the respondents estimate the risk of BI due to an accident and burnout to be equally high. In fact, according to the GDV, mental illnesses such as burnout or depression are the most common causes of BI at 30 percent. Serious accidents, on the other hand, account for only around 8 percent of all BI cases.

Protection against occupational disability is one of the most important types of insurance

“Financial protection against occupational disability is one of the most important safeguards of all,” stresses the CEO of R+V Lebensversicherung AG, Claudia Andersch. “In the event of a long-term loss of income, the families are not protected from an existential emergency.” When it comes to protection against occupational disability, there is something for every customer requirement. For example, there are BU products with several tariff lines, ranging from inexpensive and solid insurance to an extensive all-round carefree package.

Bert Heidekamp, a tested and certified BDSF expert (Federal Association of German Experts and Expert Appraisers), says of the general importance of BU insurance: “Financial security and livelihoods are particularly at risk if an accident or illness results in disability. The BU Risk is independent of age or occupation and occurs very often. Disability insurance is an essential protection, which is often the only protection for the financial existence of the insured person and his family. It supplements state benefits, provided that statutory entitlements exist. Private protection offers in the event of a disability, peace and security in knowing that you are well taken care of in the event of a disability. It reduces stress and allows the individual to focus on their recovery and well-being.”
