Less money for roads: what is missing in the Bautzen district?

Bautzen. At first glance, it is like always in the warm season: the roads are being built as much as possible. But it doesn’t stay that way. Because at the end of May, the state parliament cut the fund for the promotion of road construction measures. The double budget 2021/22 now provides 146 million euros – after a good 199 million euros in the previous two years.

With the subsidies, the Free State pays up to 90 percent of the costs when districts and municipalities bring their road network up to scratch. It cannot be assumed that construction workers will have to put down the shovel overnight. Rosalie Stephan from the State Office for Road Construction and Transport (Lasuv) says that “obligations for ongoing construction work will continue to be served primarily”.

But it could be tight for new projects. The red pencil is not yet raging in the project lists. But the district of Bautzen is urgently waiting for funding for several road construction measures that are to begin in the next few weeks.

Sächsische.de gives an overview of where construction is currently taking place – and where not.

Construction is currently underway on these federal highways

In May, the expansion of the B 96 between Caminau and the kaolin factory began. The 800 meters should be drivable again by winter and around 760,000 euros will be built for it. In July and August, the B 96 will also get a new surface between the Zescha and Königswartha junction – costs: around 130,000 euros.

In Laußnitz, around 670 meters of the B 97 have been renovated since 2020. In addition, new wastewater and rainwater services are coming under the road. The municipality of Laußnitz, the regional waste water association and the energy supplier Ewag contribute a total of around 1.2 million euros to the construction costs. The federal government is assuming 1.3 million euros. In July he also wants to renew the surface between Bernsdorf and the Zeißholz junction.

The B 98 through Wehrsdorf has been completely closed since May. Around 2.5 kilometers of lane will be renewed by September for around 825,000 euros. Construction of a new retaining wall in Steinigtwolmsdorf is scheduled to begin in June. Remaining work is still in progress on the new B 98 roundabout in Rammenau. In August, the B 98 near Glauschnitz (municipality of Laußnitz) gets a new road surface.

This is where the country builds: roads, bridges, roundabouts

The Free State is pursuing a pilot project with Wurschen. There, the water from Kuppritz is given a new overpass – using concrete with rustproof reinforcement. A few hundred meters of the road will be renewed at the same time by the end of October.

A replacement bridge, which costs around 600,000 euros, has been underway in Pulsnitz since July 2020. According to Lasuv, the work is coming to an end. During the summer holidays, the Free State wants to renew 200 meters of Bischofswerdaer Straße through Pulsnitz. For this, 60,000 euros are estimated.

In Salzenforst, a roundabout will soon replace an intersection. The work should last until October. The Free State pays 400,000 euros. The district and the city of Bautzen each contribute 100,000 euros. Between Salzenforst and the Schmochtitz junction, the state road is to get a new surface for around 90,000 euros by August.

A new bridge will be built over the Lomschanke in Milkel by September. Saxony is paying around 320,000 euros for this.

This is where the circle builds: roads, bridges, retaining walls

The excavators are biting into two districts of Großharthau: construction has been underway in the Seeligstadt thoroughfare since 2018 – costs: around 8.7 million euros. Everything should be ready in November. In Bühlau, construction of a retaining wall begins in July for 465,000 euros.

In the Großnaundorf district of Pulsnitz, a bridge and three retaining walls along a district road will be renewed by autumn. The circle costs almost 3.4 million euros.

Since 2020, the through traffic of small buildings has been renewed for 2.8 million euros. The work is scheduled to end in July 2022.

A new passage costing around 1.9 million euros will be given to Koblenz between Knappensee and Silbersee by December.

The expansion of the Häslich through-road in the Haselbachtal community will take until July. Vehicles then roll here on a road that costs around 880,000 euros.

Towards the end, the renewal of the Tätzschwitz through-town is going on. The work, which cost around 800,000 euros, began in September 2020.

A new bridge is being built for 410,000 euros over the Hänelwasser in Prietitz, a district of Elstra.

The district wants to use the summer holidays to renew the road between Burkau and the Säuritz junction. The costs should amount to around 150,000 euros.

In Bornitz, a district of Radibor, the through-road is being renewed for 60,000 euros.

The district is still waiting for funding

In Soritz, a district of Kubschütz, the district plans to renew a bridge from September for around 550,000 euros. However, the district office is still waiting for the requested funding.

This also applies to the construction of a new bridge in the Kamenz district of Wiesa, planned for August. The work will take a year and cost around 1.5 million euros.

The district is also waiting for funding for the local transit through Maukendorf, the construction of a new cycle path between Maukendorf and Wittichenau and the construction of the road between Tätzschwitz and Geierswalde.

The district has already had to postpone two other projects: the construction of a new retaining wall in Lichtenberg near Pulsnitz and the through-road in the Koenigsbrück district of Graefenhain. The funding was applied for in 2018, says district spokeswoman Cynthia Thor. “However, we assume that these have not fallen victim to the red pen, but will still be funded by the Free State of Saxony until 2022.”
