Less, less! ‘Majority of Dutch people want to make substantial cutbacks on cost-consuming development aid and migration’

The next government will have to cut back considerably on development aid and migration. That is the outcome of an investigation following Prinsjesdag. According to the participants, the available money could be better spent on healthcare.

The panel of Heart of the Netherlands held a plebiscite among 4,000 average Dutch people. The survey shows that 64 percent of the Dutch want to cut the costs of development aid and migration. Desired cutbacks in defense (9 percent), climate and nature (8 percent) and traffic and transport (7 percent) follow at a considerable distance.

A participant in the study argues clearly why a new government should cut back on development aid and migration: “A lot of money is going into this. Take care of your own people first. There is already so much poverty in the Netherlands.” Another participant adds: “No nagging, close the door.”

More money
Where should the money go then? The Dutch also have a crystal clear opinion about this. 26 percent of the participants want more homes to be built. According to the panel, this appears to be a major concern for young people in particular. 28 percent say that all cuts in development aid and migration should be invested in health care. The other categories have to make do with 13 percent (AOW and other benefits), 11 percent (combat crime) and 8 percent (education and childcare).
