Less existential fear among companies than the Crown crisis

MUNICH (dpa-AFX) – The current economic crisis is causing German companies considerably less anxiety than the Crown crisis. About 7.5% of companies currently say their existence is threatened, according to a survey by the Ifo Institute in Munich released on Monday. This is much less than during the hot phase of the Corona crisis. In June 2020, at 21.8%, nearly three times as many companies felt threatened. “In view of the sharp economic slowdown, companies are proving very strong,” said Ifo expert Klaus Wohlrabe.

The present value is also relatively small over time. Although it is slightly higher than the last survey in April, 7.1% of companies felt threatened at the time. But in January the value was still much higher at 13.7 percent – even in December and June 2021 with 14 each, in February 2021 with 18.7 and in November 2020 with 17.6 percent.

The retail sector is currently particularly affected, with 11.6% of companies having existential fears. “The current inflationary dynamics are causing retailers great concern,” said Wohlrabe. Here, too, the values are far lower than in January and previous queries.

Production at 7.0, services at 7.7 and construction at 7.2% are close to the average. “Rising energy prices have led to a slight increase in fear of existence, especially in energy-intensive sectors,” said Wohlrabe ahead of the manufacturing industry. “Industry orders are still well filled.”
