less cash than before and without being able to make QR payments – 2024-05-03 10:28:57

The bankization campaign, which was forced on the people by the Cuban government due to the scarcity of cash, seems to be failing completely, since the Island has less cash than eight months ago and there are difficulties in carrying out the online payments.

The failures of this campaign, which was sold as the solution to the cash problems in Cuba, were recognized by the state portal Radio Sancti Spíritus, which points out that the branches of the Banco Popular de Ahorro (BPA) in that territory compute that Only 4% of all e-commerce operations are through QR codes.

The official text assures that in a large part of private and state establishments, the QR does not work, this being a “little lie” photo, something that has been evidenced by “controls by the State Directorate of Commerce.”

And, although the decrees launched in 2023 by the Castro regime make it mandatory to enable such payments, 80% of establishments announce that you can pay by QR, but they create obstacles for the customer because they prefer cash payments.

“Those who hear the allegations experience it, if there is no connection or it is delayed, if the owner or administrator is not there or because the photo is for the inspectors to see,” adds the aforementioned state media.

With this, banks are facing a more serious cash shortage than the one recorded about eight months ago, when measures to promote banking in Cuba intensified.

The measure was never well received, and to this day citizens struggle to find functional ATMs with enough cash to meet their demands.

For their part, the authorities must deal with an inadequate financial culture, technological limitations and an evident resistance on the part of private and state businesses to cooperate with banking.

The situation is a little more serious in Sancti Spíritus, since the banks do not have the cash to dispense the money that belongs to their citizens on time.

As a consequence, the government of the territory of Sancti Spiritus decided not to put more money in ATMs and limit the withdrawal of money in banks to only 5,000 Cuban pesos (CUP)this in an attempt to force the people to use electronic payments.
