Les Bleus win without getting the bonus point against a very combative team
The French party in Lille is half successful. Les Bleus, fresh from their resounding debut victory, also managed to beat Uruguay, but not before struggling for eighty minutes.
The Teros lost, but managed to score 2 tries and put Fabien Galthiè’s strong team in serious difficulty. In anticipation of the next match in Nice, Kieran Crowley’s Azzurri will have to be very careful.
France is momentarily top of pool A with 8 points without having obtained the bonus point that perhaps it had already planned for the day before.
On Uruguay’s side, however, there remain excellent signs in terms of competitive spirit and also the ability to attack effectively with the ball in hand. Up until the 70th minute the South American team was still playing against one of the world cup favourites.
Rugby World Cup 2023: the news of France-Uruguay
Unexpectedly Uruguay scores the first goal of the match. Winger Nicolas Freitas is the best of all to collect a poisonous kick from Etchverry and mark the corner for the 3-5 in favor of the Teros. Shortly before he had broken Melvyn Jamimet from the pitch.
France’s response is timely. In the first concrete attack in the twenty-two opponents, Hastoy receives an inviting ball from Lucu and overcomes the Uruguayan defense by smashing for 8 to 3 which becomes 10 to 3 after Jaminet’s conversion.
The Toulouse fullback repeats himself shortly after from the pitch with a penalty that means 13 to 5 after only 15 minutes. However, the French surge stopped due to a well-placed, aggressive and also very enterprising Uruguay team.
The team coached by Esteban Meneses, in numerical superiority due to a somewhat dubious yellow card (also seen in the bunker) given to Romain Taofifenua, also manages to achieve the goal of a possible 13 to 10. It’s a shame for the South Americans that the referee Ben O’Keeffe disagrees due to an obstruction by the Inciarte center which nullifies Etcheverry’s performance in the middle of the pitch.
Galthiè’s men are unable to find the key to the problem and after an excellent start to the first half they end up suffering the visitors’ initiatives and the first half ends at 13 to 5.
The second half proves to be tricky for Les Bleus once again. In the 53rd minute, fullback Amaya breaks into the French defense and scores the goal at 13 to 10, then 13 to 12 thanks to Etchverry’s conversion.
This was probably Uruguay’s best moment, but they made the mistake of relaxing for a moment and France struck immediately. Newly substitute Mauvaka takes possession of a badly kicked ball from the Uruguayan number 10 and gives him the lead again.
The waste of energy in the first 70 minutes cost Uruguay dearly and in the 72nd minute they had to give in to the vehemence of the French attacks. For the young Bielle-Biarrey it is child’s play to receive the ball wide and finalize the work on the flanks of his teammates. Jaminet’s foot is once again perfect and the scoreboard is 27 to 12.
In the final minutes there is room for many isolated attacks and just as many changes of possession. However, the score no longer changes and France can celebrate their second, hard-earned victory in the World Cup.
