Leprosy in Indonesia: Ranking 3rd Worldwide, Facts and Strategies for Elimination

TASIKMALAYA, RADARTASIK.ID – Leprosy has not disappeared from Indonesia. Chronic bacterial infection that attacks skin tissue, nerves and the respiratory tract is a disease that consistently persists in this country.

Indonesia is ranked as the third country in the world with cases of leprosy after Brazil and India.

Leprosy is known by its scientific name Hansen’s disease is a chronic disease caused Mycobacterium leprae.

World health organization (World Health Organization) designated leprosy as one of 20 forgotten tropical diseases and is targeted to be eliminated by 2030.

Reporting from sehatnegeriku.kemkes.go.id In Indonesia, there are 7100 new leprosy sufferers with child cases reaching 11%. There are 17,000-20,000 new cases every year.

In fact, Indonesia has achieved national leprosy elimination in 2000 with numbers prevalence 0.9 per 10,000 population.

Leprosy management is regulated in Minister of Health Regulation Number 11 of 2019. To date, there are 98 districts/cities that have not achieved leprosy elimination.

The management and prevention of leprosy in Indonesia is not optimal, due to at least three factors. First, it is late to come to health services because of stigma and access to health.

Second, it was diagnosed late due to health personnel factors. Third, treatment is too late due to the availability of drugs, health personnel factors, and inadequate health services to treat complications and rehabilitation.

The Ministry of Health also explained strategies for accelerating the elimination of leprosy, including mobilizing the community by utilizing various community resources. Increasing the capacity of the health service system.

Increasing integration and coordination with stakeholders and health facilities, both government and private. Lastly, strengthen commitment, policies and program management to tackle leprosy.

Don’t forget, people also have to be aware of symptoms such as discolored skin patches, numbness and a faded appearance on the skin.
