Lepena calls Macron the most authoritarian president in French history

French presidential candidate Marina Lepena, the leader of the far-right National Union, on Thursday named the current head of state Emmanuel Macron as the most authoritarian president ever in France.

Lepena rejected Macron’s accusations that she continued to hold on to authoritarian and extremist views, despite trying to create a softer image of herself in the election campaign.

“It makes me smile because we have never had a president who has shown more signs of extremism than Emmanuel Macron,” Lepena said in an interview with France 2, citing police attitudes to “yellow vest” protests and other demonstrations.

Lepena said in an interview that if elected, she could hold a referendum on the reinstatement of the death penalty. She has previously said that she would vote against such a move.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Campaign Control Commission has asked the Lepena campaign for clarifications on allegations of immigration and crime that it has falsely attributed to the authorities.

However, the commission said Lepena would not have to change her campaign flyers, which had already been printed.

Lepena called the commission’s request for clarification a political maneuver.
