The councilor of the City Council of Lepe, Aurelio Madrigal has attended the municipal representative together with Ángela Feria, media collaborator of the initiative, at the informative press conference for the dissemination of the bone marrow donation campaign for Paulathe 11-year-old girl from Almonte, diagnosed with leukemia, who needs a bone marrow transplant.
During the call, they have encouraged the population to collaborate with the cause and to come to the Virgen Bella de Lepe Hospital on March 8, 9 and 10, with hours from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., for the donation of blood and marrow.
Healthy people between 18 and 40 hours can be marrow donors. The procedure is currently simpler, at first blood is drawn and registration is processed in a registry of bone marrow donors. Marrow donation in our country is voluntary and altruistic.
The promoters of the initiative have opened an Instagram account to promote bone marrow donation for Paula @siguenandandodory and for the extraction in Lepe they have launched a challenge on the same social network with the hashtag #100leperosdonantesdemédula to encourage participation.
Bone marrow transplantation is the only hope for many with leukemia and other blood diseases. It consists of replacing the diseased cells of the patient with healthy cells from a donor. According to data from the Josep Carreras Foundation, each year 6,400 people are diagnosed with leukemia in Spain. Many will need a bone marrow transplant to overcome the disease, 3 out of 4 patients will not have a compatible family member.
