Leonid Filatov: The Disappointment of Censored Desire in the Soviet Film Industry

Filatov was discouraged by the director’s demand.

The film “Crew” by Alexander Mitta was released in 1980 and instantly made Leonid Filatov a sex symbol of the Soviet screen. Many viewers had no idea how much the artist in real life differs from his on-screen image. And this despite the fact that the most shocking scenes were removed from the film – censorship did not allow explicit “nudity”.

Filatov and his co-star Alexandra Yakovleva had a sex scene planned. The artist immediately agreed, but Leonid Alekseevich was very surprised. He knew how strict Soviet censorship was, and did not think that such an episode would be allowed on the big screens.

The actor’s expectations were met. The scene had to be removed because it was considered too explicit. Therefore, all Filatov’s efforts were in vain. But the audience never learned that flight engineer Skvortsov could have been even “hotter.”
