According to the creators of the exhibition “Delfi”, the works of Leonard Laganovskis included in the exhibition were created in the last two years – at a time when the world is on an irreversible path of change; “However, the universal values that Laganowski has represented throughout his work have remained the same. The language of the artist’s expression has also remained the same.”

Leonard Laganovsky is called a convincing conceptualist, that is, an artist who rejects the representation of visual reality or exposes it to a systemic understanding of the idea.

“The double code called postmodernism, when the opposite meanings are combined in one whole, or in one work of art, respectively, Laganovskis experienced in childhood, when he was influenced by the books read in the large library of his father, sarcasm master Jezupa Laganovsky, on the other. “This is one of the artist ‘s driving forces – doubts that go into theories, but ultimately rely on themselves,” the creators of the exhibition write.

The works on display in the exhibition are grouped into series. One of them, “Sights of Spain”, was created during a pandemic when travel and new impressions were not possible. Looking at world maps, the artist came up with an idea for works in which the most visited and beautiful places of tourists are depicted with map signs and symbols. Initially, confusing images become an exciting symbol encryption, allowing you to forget for a moment the harsh reality that led to the creation of these works. The work from the cycle “Shooting Sports. Football” simultaneously involves tragedy and irony. The image of the football field shows the holes corresponding to the number of players and referees on the field. Much like in computer games, the main purpose of which is to exterminate an opponent, the holes symbolize the destroyed athletes. Power changes, grinding people’s lives. The artist clearly shows his position in the exhibition. Which side of the square will you choose to be on? Such an question is asked by the artist.

Leonard Laganovsky was born on November 1, 1955, in the Larissa and Jesup Laganovski families. Almost no review of Leonard Laganovsky’s exhibition is without reference to his father Jezups Laganovskis, who was born in Kabulova village, Kārsava parish, Ludza district. The influence of the father in childhood has been strong. The irony bordering on sarcasm, the comprehensive knowledge, the encouragement to explore all that is already known in order to create something new, has undoubtedly influenced the regularities of the son’s creative process.

Leonard Lagnovsky graduated from the State Academy of Arts in 1979, lived in Berlin in the 1990s, holding almost twenty solo exhibitions in Germany and receiving several awards and scholarships, as well as lecturing. In 1997, the artist returned to Riga and every year organized a solo exhibition, which earned a wide resonance in society. The artist has studied interior design, scenography, works in various fields – drawing, graphics, painting, photography. Laganovskis has also curated several exhibitions, the most recent of which is the significant exhibition “ES_TEXT”, which will be on view at LNMM until May 1 this year.
