Leonard Bernstein: Maestro – A Compelling Portrait of Love, Music, and Secrets

The 28-year-old young composer Leonard Bernstein, who would later celebrate world success not only with his “West Side Story” but also as a celebrated conductor, met Felicia Montealegre at a party. From then on, the graceful and interesting woman enchants his life. Month after month, their affection for each other grows, but Bernstein actually carries a deep secret with him. “One of the best films of the year,” said Rolling Stone about “Maestro” – shown this week as the sensor film of the month at the Murnau Filmtheater.

“A stirring, complex and heartbreaking delight,” said the Financial Times, and The Hollywood Reporter found the film “as stirringly symphonic and emotional as Bernstein’s music,” which can of course also be heard throughout the film’s 129 riveting minutes. “A moving and definitely worth seeing homage to the great conductor and humanitarian Leonard Bernstein and his love for music and people,” praises Deutschlandfunk.

The life of Leonard Bernstein is told, but above all his married and love life. Only after they both get married does Felicia (Carey Mulligan) discover that her husband is homosexual and is secretly living out these longings. In order not to burden her husband, who is now considered one of the greatest composers and conductors of all time, or their three children, she keeps the secret to herself. However, the lonely nights and her husband’s immersion in music demand everything from her. Their relationship, in which both of them soon have extramarital affairs, is repeatedly put to the test.

Bradley Cooper not only directs the film homage, but also embodies the loving and suffering, the chain-smoking and whiskey-drinking, the brilliant and driven Bernstein in a fascinating way, not only visually very similar, but also with all the emotions and devotion for which Leonard Bernstein was known. “Maestro” is very close to Leonard Bernstein, the film – produced by Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, premiered at the Venice Film Festival 2023 – is a must for fans and interested parties and is also worth seeing “just because” as a strong portrait of a special personality.

“Maestro” is shown as the sensor film of the month in the Murnau Filmtheater on December 21st, 5:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. (OmU) and on December 22nd at 5:15 p.m. We are giving away three “2 for 1” tickets (pay for 1 ticket, get 2 tickets) – email us by December 20th, 6 p.m., to [email protected] with the desired date
